Did you know that—
On June 11, 1805, Detroit was destroyed by fire when the ashes from baker John Harvey’s pipe reportedly set his barn ablaze.
In 1835, the Michigan Territory’s population reached 85,000, qualifying it for statehood. The U.S. Congress, however, refused to grant statehood. Finally, on January 26, 1837, Michigan became the 26th state of the U.S.A., and Detroit was the first state capital.
Henry Ford’s first automotive manufacturing company failed after 3 years and only produced 2 cars.
In 1919, the world’s first four-way three-color traffic light was installed in Detroit at the corner of Woodward and Michigan.
